Support the AFFORDABLE Housing Guarantee AcT

The history of the battle to unlock 2020’s Prop I affordable housing funds was covered in Part 2 of our “Good Policy: Affordable Housing for All” series. Housing advocates Kyle Smeallie and Shanti Singh reflect on overwhelming support from voters to tax luxury office tower sales for affordable housing for a range of income levels. It netted $400m for new housing and rental relief – but City Hall only spent half for its intended use. Kyle and Shanti also talk about Americans’ historical pursuit of public investment for social housing as infrastructure – and why we must demand better from government today.

As announced in a recent S.F. Chronicle article, the Mayor’s recent decision to repeal 2020’s Prop I and offer tax breaks to billionaires at the height of the City’s affordability crisis has spurred a renewed interest in Prop I. Advocates have come together to put it back on the ballot this November 2026, this time with a fool-proof guarantee that the intended expenditure plan is invested right. It’s time to ensure the mega-wealthy pay their fair share to address our affordability crisis. The Afforable Housing Guarantee Act: No new taxes, just doubling down on what voters already have overwhelmingly already said “YES, PLEASE!” to.
